Classes were starting up soon, and Manuel was trying to get everything ready. Winter break was over, it was a new year, and there was a lot to do. He checked his mail before heading out for the day. Normally, he would have just grabbed the mail, set it on the coffee table, and worry about it later. But this time he looked at the envelope on the top of the pile. It was different. There was a stamp on the right hand corner of the envelope, one that he didn't recognize. It was two backward parentheses symbols with a plus sign in the middle, kind of looking like an H. It felt like he should open it right away, and so he did. And inside the envelope there were two letters, eleven pages long. Here's what it said. We know the significance of what we are going to tell you. We know that a statement of this nature is usually only made by a joker, a mentally person with delusional ideas, some journalists or publicist who intends to exploit the news for his own benefit. When a piece of news breaks the normal molds of very similitude, and there are no means and elements of judgment to testify to its reality, any balanced and intelligent mind has a right and should adot a skeptical or suspicious attitude. We must never accept simple testimony, and even less so when, as in this case, its origin is unknown and therefore suspected of fraud. We know that what we are going to reveal to you is true, but we cannot logically assume that you believe such fantastic statements. We admit that we would react the same way in your place, But it is nevertheless acceptable to have the attitude of tolerating any version, hey priori, in order to analyze it carefully and dispassionately in search of the truth. In fact, all researchers on Earth have followed this criterion. If concepts that seem fantastic and absurd yesterday had not been analyzed by competent specialists, would you have reached this cultural state that the Earth is going through. But if such concepts are erroneous, if such versions are fraudulent, if they are merely clever impostures, the truth must make its way by unmasking the deluded, the joker, the paranoid, or the impostor who tried to slip it in with the label of scientific. The letter went on and on, revealing that it was written by extraterrestrial beings from a planet called Umo. It contained very advanced mathematical formulas, dates, and the history of the planet. Manuel was confused, but it turns out at the same time that he was opening the letter in Spain, others received letters too, Professors, scientists, physicists in France, England, Germany and the US, all across the world. And this episode I'm sharing one of the strangest UFO cases I've come across. Are these claims true? That will be up to you to decide. My name is Edwin and here is a horror story. These twenty letters were all identical and written on an old typewriter. They detailed the history of the planet Umu and extraterrestrial life. But these letters were not the first, at least not in Spain. In nineteen sixty two, five years before these letters were all sent out, a man named Fernando Sesma, claimed to have received a similar letter. It was from an alien named Saliano from a planet called Aoko. Fernando had always dreamed of seeing a UFO and even started a group he called the Society of Space Friends. He was a postal worker in Spain, but he spent all of his free time writing articles about aliens. His group met at a cafe called Cafe Leon in al Calat, Spain. Once a week they would discuss UFOs and the letters Fernando was receiving. These letters didn't make much sense to anyone. They were full of drawings and vague descriptions of the planet Aoku, and after some times the letters just stopped. Fernando was sad. This contact with the supposed alien was the best thing that had ever happened to him. Then, in nineteen sixty five, Fernanda received a phone call. He didn't recognize the caller. They had a different accent and sounded kind of robotic. He told him that he would soon receive some extraterrestrial items, and not long after the call, he started getting letters. At first he thought it was his old friend Saliano, the alien from Aoko, but they weren't from him. These letters were all handed to him by someone who claimed to work for the Umites. This person always kept their identity a secret, and when asked who are you, all he would say was a delivery person. These letters were all stamped with the same strange symbol of backwards parentheses and a cross in the middle. The first one said the following, It is our wish to inform the planet Earth of our origin and the intentions which have led us to visit you. We come from Umo, a planet which orbits the star Ayuma, recorded in the astronomical maps of your planet as Wolf four two four. The difficulty of comparing and checking the identifications of your system of astronomical references against our own is quite indescribable. The letters kept coming, and eventually the author revealed himself. His name was Day ninety eight. That would be Dei. Now later on, we're going to find out that this civilization actually wrote in all capital letters, so it might be an abbreviation or his name. Anyway, he was a son of Day ninety seven. His home planet Umo went through a terrible and bloody civil war ages ago. The Umites were being exploited by the ruler n A four five six and her father an A three twelve. Before her, n A four five six named herself the Brain of the Umites, basically forcing them to accept her as their god. She imposed her belief system on all of them, and Eumites who refused her were destroyed. And this went on for decades and decades until n A four five six mysteriously died, But then her daughter w I E one took over and killed four million Umites, and that's what caused the war. The Umites started fighting back and started destroying everything science related. They burned down libraries, power plants, and more. When Umite stood out during this time, he was known as umoh Woah, the Redeemer of Umo. He talked about peace and harmony, but the official Uma government didn't like his message till they tried to kill him. Before they could, he vanished before their eyes. The teachings of Umuwawa stayed with the Umites and they became interested in traveling outside of Umo planet. Umo's first contact with Earth happened in the nineteen thirties when Norwegian ship was sailing the high Seas. It was during research when they sent out a radio signal at four thirteen point four to four megahertz. The signal reached planet Umo fourteen light years later. This short radio contact was enough for the Umite astronomers to figure out Earth's location. That made their first journey to Earth. In March of nineteen fifty. The craft landed in a tiny town in the Alps, and they built an underground bunker where they stayed for ten years. The ship carried eight male and two female Umites. Only some of the Umaies on the trip could actually talk. Most didn't have the ability back in their home planet. All communication was done through their minds. Once Umites reached adulthood, their vocal cords stopped working because they were rarely used. This is why they started leaving letters. It was the only way they could speak with humans, and these letters, the Umites talked about their history, culture, and home planet. They described everything. The planet Umo was kind of like Earth. It had oceans and volcanoes, but only one continent. Some of the Umite volcanoes released clouds of extremely hot white gas for many miles into the sky and added a beautiful glow to the evenings. The beings of Umo are also similar to humans, only much taller and all with a Nordic appearance, blonde hair, very pale skin, and blue eyes. They have extremely delicate fingertips, and something simple like holding a cold glass is very painful. We also have a much more advanced sense of smell than we do. There's no money in Umo, there's only one government, one religion, and one race. They can travel fast distances because of their advanced technology. They can go from Umo to Earth in eight or nine months, even though they are fourteen point six light years away. And while they seemed to advance in some ways, in others they were very similar to some people here on Earth. The society didn't believe in sex before marriage, and those who did were electrocuted. There was no homosexuality in Umo, at least it was forbidden. There's no kissing. Their language is written in all capital letters and sounds like this that Umo da da Umo, Umo da da da. This phrase means we come from Umo and have arrived from our Umo expeditionary ships. They said all this and more in their hundreds of letters. But they also had several encounters with people here on Earth. So I'll tell you some about the actual cases. In February of nineteen sixty six, so Sa Luis Jordan Pegne was driving to his home in the neighborhood of Aluce in Madrid, Spain. As he drove, he saw something that made him hit his brakes. He got out of his car and looked into the sky. There was a circular aircraft rising up to the sky. It looked to be about thirty five feet long, and as he stared in shock, the craft rose and rose, and then it took off. Underneath the UFO, there were three bright orbs. Before the UFO flew away, the orbs disappeared into it. The sky was humming, and it changed colors as it flew. Underneath the flying object was a symbol two backwards parentheses with the plus sign in the middle. Another man named Vincent Ortuno saw the same thing from his sixth floor apartment. At least five others saw it too. These accounts were reported in Spanish newspapers and led Josse Luis or Lampegna to find Fernando Sesma and the Society of Space Friends. Not long after this, people all over the world started receiving letters, and then the phone call started. They said that the voice on the other side spoke in a strange tone, almost robotic. They claimed to be an Umite. The calls happened at the exact same time all over the world. A woman named Carmen Iage claimed to see a large disc shaped object land in the desert. She was in the Spanish Sahara in nineteen sixty five, and after it landed, several manlike beings got out of the ship. They were dressed in white, shiny outfits with a strange H in the middle. They were tall, pale, and blond. In the summer of nineteen sixty seven, there was another sighting. Three people were out and about in the Madrid neighborhood of San Jose de Valderas, and they were not together, all in separate parts of the neighborhood. After they saw a circular craft with a weird looking H at the bottom, they all walked toward it. It was gone, but it left behind three tubes with the same symbol. The tubes contained green foam and this material was tested and then it was identified as polovinyl fluoride, something only NASA had access to at the time. Then a man contacted the Society of Space Friends and in his letter he said that he was a typist for the umites. They could not type their own letters because of their sensitive finger tips. The man had put out an ad on the local newspaper offering his typing services, and not long after he was approached by two men. They were very tall, blonde and well dressed. At first they told the man. They were Danish doctors and needed him to type some scientific medical sentences. It was fine, and so they had him type the following We come from a celestial body named Umo, which is fourteen point six light years from the Earth. He questioned them and they were forced to reveal their true identities. To prove they weren't lying, they produced a small metallic orb. The orb started playing back events from the man's life, footage that was impossible for them to have. They told them, even though they had advanced technology, they could not intervene in Earth matters, and the letters continued to arrive. Soon Jacques Vali, an esteemed French scientists, received a letter too. He was well respected in his field. When he said the scientific formulas and the letters were accurate and made it all officially real. News of the letters exploded in Spain. In France, thousands began to believe, and as time went on, the letter started getting darker. One letter from nineteen seventy three stated that there would be a nuclear war on Earth. It also said that all Umites were going to disappear, but they would give all believers shelter. In nineteen eighty, Antonio Ribera was working on a documentary about the Umo affair when he received a letter himself. The letter contained a message that Umites wanted him to include at the end of the film. For thirty years, we have been studying your sciences, your culture, your history, and your civilizations. We brought all this information from your Earth to the planet Umo, and started there in our titanium crystals. We have shown you our culture and technology in a purely descriptive form, so that you cannot convert it to or adopt it blindly. You have done this because we are saddened to learn that you use your science primarily for war and destruction. You are like children playing with terrible and dangerous toys that will destroy you. We cannot do anything about it. A cosmic law says that each world must go its own way, whether it survives or perishes. You chose the second option. You are destroying your planet, wiping out its species, and poisoning your atmosphere and seas until now beyond repair. It is with sadness that we see your madness and understand that the enemy is only within you. We cannot predict your future, for your psyches act completely unpredictably and capers that bordered on paranoia. As your older brothers in the universe, we sincerely desire your salvation. Do not destroy your beautiful blue planet, a rare atmospheric world that glides through space, so majestically, so full of life. It's your choice. Then all contact stopped. The last letter was received in nineteen ninety and over the years, over six thousand people got these letters. The last sighting happened in nineteen eighty nine, and if you remember our episode about a UFO sighting in Veronesh, Russia, some of these witnesses saw the UMO that strange age on one of the alien crafts. But even as the letter stopped, the believers grew. Then in nineteen ninety three, jsse Luis hordan Pene announced that it was all fake, that he made it all up, the letters, the diagrams, the phone calls. He lied about the Elucha sightings and faked the San Jose de Valdera sighting. He and a couple of friends faked the pictures by using a beach bucket. He even faked the green foam and radioactive sand found at the landing site. One of the supposed witnesses, Vincent Tortuno, was his roommate. They faked the pictures together and sent them to newspaper anonymously. But even with this confession, there were many who didn't believe them. The formulas and logic in the letters were far too advance for him to think up on his own. Some of them mentioned things that hadn't even been discovered yet, like black matter. To these people, this was evidence that Umo was real. To others, this was proof of an organization like the CIA was helping Jose Luis hor Dan Peena, and by the time he died he admitted regretting all of it. Some people refused to believe that it was a lie, and these beliefs led terrible things. A cult that named themselves the Daughters of Umo came out of all this. The presidents of the cult was Florencia de Novigutierres. That's not her real name, that's the name she gave herself when she created the cult. She was born in perunineteen twelve as Juana Bordiaveli. She left home at the age of twelve after being abused by her dad. She was living in the streets until a Spanish priest gave her shelter at nineteen, she left the church. She spent some time in a mental hospital in nineteen forty one, where she was treated for obsessions and extraterrestrial hallucinations. While in the hospital, she met Carlos Opanova, another patient. They fell in love and got married. He also happened to be the leader of a different cult named Dear of the Sixth Christ. At some point, a friends showed him some of the UMO letters and Carlos's mind was blown. He changed the beliefs of his cult and was consumed by all things. Zumo began telling his followers that he was in Umite named Yahwaca, and Juana became Florencia. The Daughters of Umo was born. By now, they were in Bolivia and more people began to join them. New members are welcomed through a specific ritual. They are separated into two groups, separated by genders. The men are given purple hats and the women in green. Carlos shakes the hand of each new member that is a man, and he kisses each woman. Then Juana comes out from behind some curtains. She takes out a dagger from her robes, and then she chooses one random woman She cuts that woman's breast drawing blood. The members of the cults wake up very early and work hard. They follow the OA, a bible created by Juana and Carlos. Once a year, they're supposed to bring thirty new members. Eventually, each children started going missing, the daughters claimed to bring in children as new members to meet their quota. The status of the cult is unknown. Ifuana was still alive, she would be over one hundred years old. No one knows if someone kept the cult going or if it's simply disbanded. The strangest thing about this case is that you can still find active Twitter accounts claiming Jose Luis hor Dan Pena lie to protect the people from UMO. There's even a man named Dennis who gives Umit language lessons on YouTube. There are still those who believe that it was all real. There are some beliefs with strong theories behind it. Why has humanity advanced so much in just the last one hundred years? Is there life and other planets? When looking into the story, I kept thinking of a specific quote by Arthur C. Clark, and I'll leave you with this. Two possibilities exist. Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not both are equally terrifying.
